What is Gmail? A Starter Guide To Google Gmail Account

Email service became a part of our daily life. When I created my email account first time in Yahoo and it was a great experience having an email account back in 2007.

Google Gmail entered into the email service with a great line of offers whether it’s cloud storage or simple but elegant user interface with 1 GB email cloud storage at that time. Before Gmail, there’re already giant players like Yahoo mail, Microsoft Outlook, GMX and many more but Gmail became more popular with time.

Later on, Gmail kept working on its features and increased cloud storage to 15 GB that includes Photos, Google Drive storage.

What Is Gmail Account?

Gmail is a web-based email (Electronic Mail) service and you can log in using a browser or with the help of a smartphone Gmail application. You can download Gmail App in your Android | iPhone.

And the interesting part is, there is no charge for Gmail services. Anyone can create and use for general purpose email service. However, if you are looking for a business purpose, you can upgrade to its premium service (G Suite).

Why Gmail is more popular and better than other?

Since the inception of Gmail, I’ve started using it and have seen the progress to date. There are so many other email service providers like Yahoo Mail, Microsoft Outlook, GMX, Yandex and counting on but Gmail is one of the most used ones. Let’s dive into the details to know it’s secret.

Gmail Features That Differentiate It Than Others

1. Auto Filter By Mail Type:

Gmail introduced this useful features that helps you to find out the email types very easily. Here, you can see three categories according to email type. In primary tab, all the general purpose email comes, social media emails comes under Social and promotional types under promotions.

2. Create Your Own Label:

Gmail has the default label as you can see on the left side like Inbox, Starred, Snoozed, etc. But sometimes you need other than an available label and you can create it very easily. First, go to your mailbox and select an email or more than one to put them in your new label. Click on move to as shown in the image and click on create a new button.

In this new window, type your new label name and click on the Create button. You can also nest under already available label by selection from the drop down shown in the image above.

3. Gmail Confidential Mode:

Google added new features from time to time on it’s Gmail service and the confidential mode is one of them. The recipient won’t have the option to forward, print, copy or download when you send the mail in confidential mode and the recipient can view your mail with the help of passcode.

4. Schedule Email:

Google is known for continuous improvement in its product and they have added the newest feature i.e. schedule email. Now you schedule for tomorrow morning, evening or you can select your own date & time to be sent. Click on compose, enter recipient address, subject, and body and to schedule send, click on option button just right side of the send button and set the date, time of your choice.

5. Advanced Spam & Phishing Protections:

Spam is an integral part of the email market and it can’t be handled easily. But Gmail’s AI features can detect the spam emails and send these emails to the spam folder by default. It can’t identify 100% but it learns from your actions such as if you mark a mail as spam, then Gmail send mails from that user into the spam folder automatically and so on.

Meanwhile, if you believe the mail is not an spam, you can mark it as not an spam and move it into the inbox.

6. Huge Amount Of Spaces:

If you use google account mainly for email services, your google storage is never less for you as mails hardly take much amount of size. Gmail comes with a huge amount of storage that is 15 GB free of cost but it includes Google Drive & Photos storage as well.

If you are running out of space, you can delete your inbox or purchase more storage at reasonable price.

7. Gmail In build Search Option:

Suppose you have more than 10,000 mails in your inbox out of which you are looking for some specific mail only then it’s very difficult to find that mail. But with the help of Gmail search, you can search that by typing the keyword in the search bar.

See above, I have searched for “” and all the related mails listed there. Now instead of 10,000 mails, you just need to find the mail which you are looking for in a few mails only. This search feature made it very easy get the desired mail in less time.

How To Create/Setting Up A Gmail Account?

Gmail id nothing but a Google account. In short, for all google products, there’s only one account to login and this is the beauty of Google account. Setting up a Gmail account is easy. You will start with Google account and you can login into gmail with that.

Follow These Steps To Setting Up Gmail Account:

Step 1: Open a browser and type or in the address bar and click on create an account option as shown in the image below.

Step 2: The sing up window will appear and fill all the field shown in the signup form as I entered for an example here below.

Step 3: Now, enter your mobile number to verify the authenticity in the next window. This is a two-step verification process for security purposes.

Step 4: Click on next button and you will receive a verification code in your mobile number starting with G-. Enter the code to complete the verification process.

Step 5: You will get more option to fill such as your date of birth, gender etc. Fill all and click on next button.

Step 6: This is the final step where you need to review and accept Google’s Term of Service and Privacy Policy by clicking I agree.

Step 7: Your created Google account. You can use this account for YouTube, Gmail, Google Ads, Adsense, Google Map, and other Google products.

How To Sign in To Google’s Gmail Account?

When you create first time Google account, you will be signed in automatically if you noticed. But if you have already a Google account, you need to sign in to Google account. And at the same time, if you are using a public or shared computer, you must sign out for the safer side.

In the top right corner, click on the avatar encircled and you will get an option written as “Sign Out”, just click on the sign out option.

On the top right corner, click on the setting icon and a drop down appears, click on setting option as shown.

Gmail setting has a number of customization options. There are almost 10 tabs under setting and each has a huge number of the editable area.

The first tab is General as you can see, here you can change the email display language, phone numbers, page size and many more. I’m not going to cover all the options available in setting but you can explore from here to all tab and you can make any changes that suit you.
